Kyu Kusumoto Masataka Residence

Kusumoto Masataka, born in Iwafune in 1838, was a warrior and one of the 37 loyalists who joined the anti-shogunate movement.
In May, 1868, he became a Nagasaki prefectural judge, making connection with Inoue Bunta, who was one of the important members for the new Japanese government. Masataka went to Tokyo 3 years later, and became the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1873. He was also apppointed as a governor of Niigata Prefecture. His sincere attitudes towars various problems were highly rated.
Masataka also worked as a governor of Tokyo, a member of Chamber of Elders, Chairman of Tokyo City Council, a member of the House of Representatives, and finally the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was given a rank of baron in 1896, and died at the age of 65 in 1902.
This residence was built by Masataka in 1871, and is open to public as an important Buke Yashiki (Samurai House) building in Omura.

The prisoners said farewell to their families, drank water together (tradition for final parting), and were taken to the martyrdom. The stone wet with their tear is said to never be covered in moss.

Saishi Wakare no Ishi

According to the Omura clan archives, Terashima is the place where Fujiwara Naozumi, the ancestor of Omura, first arrived in Omura.
Terashima, with beautiful old pine trees, has a legendary stone which Fujiwara Naozumi tied the rope of the boat to.

Omura Sumitada, adopted from his original Arima family in Shimabara to the Omura family, succeeded to the Omura name as the lord of the manor in the Warring States period.
Fighting against other neighboring Sengoku Daimyos such as the Ryuzojis in Saga, the Matsuuras in Hirado, the Gotos in Takeo, Sumitada expanded his domain surrounding Omura Bay.
Goto Takaaki, who originally was from the Omura family but was put for adaption to the Gotos because of Sumitada, was always hostile toward Sumitada.
Sumitada opened Yokoseura, Fukuda,and Nagasaki Ports to trade with the West (especially Portugal). He also allowed Christianity, and became the first Kirishitan (Christian) Daimyo in Japan. He engaged in many historically important projects, among which is the Tensho Embassy, the first official visit to Europe.
　Sumitada, as a Kirishitan Daimyo, recommended Christianity to the local people. As a result, in Omura, some temples and shrines were destroyed by Kirishitan, and the whole area turned into Christianity. Muro-ji Temple at Sanjo Castle was used as a church, and Sumitada donated the Nanban Trade ports Nagasaki and Mogi to the Society of Jesus. This is how he came to have a deep relationship with Christianity.
According to a missionary Luis Frois, the number of the christians at the time was over 60000.
　 After his death in Omura, his body was buried at Muro-Ji Temple by Sanjo Castle, but it is said that , after the rennovation of the temple, his body was moved to Honkyo-Ji Temple. Unfortunately, nobody knows where his tombstone is.

Omura Sumitada

This is a history park located at the site of the last residence of Omura Sumitada. The garden with fountains and ponds still remains, and the park provides with a great deal of information about Kirishitan (Christian), Japan's trade with the West, and Omura Sumitada himself.
The park is located at Daimon, Arase-machi. The residence originally belonged to Sho Yorinosuke, a chief vassal at the time, however, after Sumitada retired due to the threatning from Ryuzoji Takanobu, lived here as his retreat.
Sumitada worshipped christianity here after his retirement, and in1587, his life of 55 years came to a close.

At the end of the Warring States period, Portugese ships arrived in Japan, and the trade with the West started. The Western ships first arrived in Hirado, but due to the discord with the Matsuuras, the Hirado lord of the manor, the Portugese looked for alternative ports, and ended up finding Yokoseura in Omura.
Omura Sumitada, the then lord of the manor of Omura, welcomed the Portugese, and also allowed Christian missionary activities. The Portugese made Omura as their regular port, and started the trade there.

The Arrival of Nanban Ships (Portugese Ships)

Yokoseura Port, because of the attack by Goto Takaaki in Takeo, was burned down and ended its role after a year of its opening.
The Portugese, who wanted to have a port in Christian-friendly Omura, started looking for another port. First they came to Fukuda, and looking for the better port, they finally arrived in Nagasaki.
In 1571, Sumitada opened Nagasaki Port, which became the main site of Nanban Trade. Later, Thanks to Sumitada's arrangement, Nagasaki and Mogi were ceded to the Society of Jesus, for the sake of their safety from other neighboring daimyos and the establishment of these ports.

The imported items from Nanban Trade were not only raw silk and silk fabrics, the main items of the trade, but also weapons such as guns, medical sciences, astronomy, music, and arts, all of which had a great impact to Japanese culture.
Moreover, the art works such as Nanban lacquer wares, the mixture of Nanban culture and Japanese culture, were exported overseas.

12 years after a missionary Francis Xavier came to Japan to propagate Christianity, Omura Sumitada approved Christianity in Omura, and he himself was baptized at Yokoseura, and became the first Kirishitan (Christian) Daimyo in Japan. His Christian name is Dom Bartolomeu, and became widely known in Europe as a Kirishitan Daimyo.
Because of his baptism, Christianity spread in Omura area.

Christianity the Whole Area

Hokobaru Martyrdom Site, located in the right side of Omura Technical High School, was the place where 131 Kirishitans were executed all at once. There is a big monument with a sheet copper relief standing there.

Dozuka Site is located in the west side of the National Route in Sakurababa. The bodies of 131 martyrs were buried in two places.
There is a bronze statue of prayer standing 150m south of the site.

At the foot of a Japanese hackberry tree, 500m north of Dozuka Site, heads of 131 martyrs are said to have been buried.
The heads and the bodies of the martyrs were buried separately because people were afraid of those body parts connected again through the Christian black art.
Now, by the hackberry tree after several generations stands a monument for the martyrs.
